“Pop is not a dirty word,” says Nefer-T, who plays saxophone, piano and takes care of the vocals and production too. This single ‘Coping Mechanism’ was delayed because he was a little rusty on the saxophone. We’re glad he waited to get it right because the finished product is awesome.
This latest single release is rather unsurprisingly about coping mechanisms and the strategies we use to try not to lose our minds. Luckily for us despite it being about the tough topic of mental health its an upbeat fun and funky track. Talking about it Nefer-T says:
“I think to avoid getting bogged down in such a heavy subject matter, I consciously wanted an upbeat and energetic song because quite often the things we do to soldier on are similarly juxtaposed from what people deem as ‘healthy’. I think the current pandemic/lockdown situation makes the song very timely.”
Nefer-T
The song is described as characteristically introspective and dry-humoured with a unique, modern sound. It really is unique and for the first few seconds, you have no idea what is about to hit you and then suddenly it does. It’s the real definition of something new and fresh. Like a zesty orange straight from the tree, you can’t wait to get into it, but unlike the fruit, it will never go off.
Nefer-T was influenced by a wide range of genres including electronic, lo-fi, alt hip-hop, electro-pop, synth-pop, house, dance, jazz, funk, neo-soul, pop, and alternative. That’s a mixed bag of eclectic tastes and so is this song
Nefer-T lets us know that a large part of writing the song was starting therapy for the first time properly. It inadvertently gave him a lot of material to work with. Hopefully, the song goes some way to normalising going to therapy and talking about mental health, or in this case singing about it.
Be sure to stream this one and get into the groove just like we did.
